Publications

Below are the details of publications available for download. The bulk of our research / strategic advice is done for individual organisations as consultancies (details here), but we also provide broader documents as outlined below.

1. Quarterly Briefings

Commencing in January 2010, the Metaverse Journal Quarterly Briefings will provide 1-3 pages of news from the previous quarter as well as highlighting key trends or issues for the coming quarter.

These briefings are primarily aimed at people who have an awareness of virtual worlds but don’t have the time to read regularly on the area. Common subscribers to these briefings are journalists, corporate PR or marketing and public sector employees who need to monitor trends or policy issues.

2. The agenda-setting challenges for virtual worlds: a discussion paper

The past couple of years have seen virtual worlds start to get on government agendas worldwide. From a policy perspective, agenda-setting is a widely researched area and it’s very pertinent to virtual environments.

To that extent, this discussion paper analyses the challenges to date in ensuring virtual worlds do end up as a policy priority for governments. If you’re someone interested in the policy aspects of virtual worlds, you may find this paper useful.

If you’re an experienced policy analyst you’re going to find the paper very broad, but otherwise it’s a good overview of the challenges and progress to date.

3. Virtual Worlds and Business: 2010 Overview

We’ve updated our 2009 overview (which you can still download below if you want a comparison). It covers key virtual environments and provides a little more depth on business issues. It also looks at some of the stereotypes and misconceptions around as well as summarising the real opportunities.

This is a document for those new to the field or those wanting a simple exposition on the topic to provide to others.

It remains a free download – here’s where you go to get it.

4. Virtual Worlds and Business: 2009 Overview

This early 2009 document is a an overview of the opportunities virtual worlds provide for business and a brief summary of five virtual worlds to watch (Second Life, VastPark, OpenSim grids, OLIVE and Metaplace) – there are obviously many more but as an overview they provide a good snapshot.

Anyone regularly exposed to the intricacies of virtual worlds won’t get a lot out of the document, but it does provide a basic launch pad for a wider exploration, as well as refuting some of the stereotypes surrounding the use of virtual worlds in business.
