Hamlet is a horrible statistical mathematician. I've criticized his "polls" consistently but it doesn't stop him from drawing all kinds of conclusions from absolutely zero significant statistics. Let's examine what you've done in this post. If I get this straight, we assume that OpenSim grids are growing and then conclude that OpenSim grids are growing. As ridiculous as it may seem, your math is correct! But, unfortunately, meaningless.

One fundamental difference between Jibe and SecondLife/Opensim is that Jibe runs completely in a web browser. This allows you to create examples like the HIV one above, where Jibe is living in a browser window while events in the Jibe world are communicating with and *changing* the web page content. I love SecondLife and Opensim for what they do very well (e.g., realtime collaborative building). But if you're looking for complete integration with the web, then Jibe offers something unique. It's all about choosing the right tool for the right job.

More info about Jibe and web integration: http://becunningandfulloftricks.com/2011/04/01/why-a-virtual-world-on-a-webpage-is-awesome/ and http://becunningandfulloftricks.com/2011/06/29/contextually-relevant-coolness-how-to-make-jibe-automatically-load-new-content-on-your-webpage/

I don't have any fundamental objection to Jibe/Unity3D but don't see how in your example it "removes a lot of the downsides research to date has shown about using Second Life or OpenSim on its own". You imported a mesh, rotated it and linked to a web page. That functionality has been present in OpenSim (and, of course, SL) for a good while. There are substantial generic mesh repositories and you can make your own molecules (and maybe viruses) using UCSF Chimera and MeshLab. Good luck with Jibe anyway but please do explain your reasoning more fully in future.

Have not actually used Minecraft (though I've seen it on GoodGame) so I can't comment on that, but with Second Life normally what happens is the latest controversy or major media coverage draws new users. I can remember a huge spike in 2009 after one couple divorced after a bit of virtual infidelity in SL and it hit the news. But how to determine numbers? Many folk have alternate accounts and others just stop using SL without deleting their account.

While this figure is impressive it is undoubtedly inflated by two factors. Firstly, one account does not just equate to one person, as many virtual worlds either allow a person to have multiple accounts, or are are hacked by users to do so (by social engineering). Secondly, there will be inactive accounts as well as some worlds allow a person to create an account but NOT delete it, and other users create an account, don't like what they see, but never bother to delete them.

Even so, if we reduce this to 1/2 or 1/4 of the above figure, it's still impressive.

It is hard to know what is going on in the OpenSim grids. I can't see it being a good sign when a grid stops reporting stats. One can speculate the numbers are going down or up.

I tend to agree with Hamlet because of the last years trend. In the comments to OpenSim
vs Second Life vs Minecraft I added a copy HyperGridBusiness' graph with different trend lines. Maria Korolov's point that we can't know user numbers are decreasing is well made in the comments. But, I think the real point is we can't know what they are doing, increasing or decreasing.
